The “democratic socialist” from New York has pushed for the policy in alarmist terms: “People are going to die,” she says, unless it becomes law. Or perhaps “Americans are dying” already. Either way, we face “cataclysmic climate disaster” unless Congress can “plan and implement a Green New Deal” in ten years. But the “Green New Deal” has little to do with the environment.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Republican U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee announced Monday that he won’t seek re-election in 2020, a decision that gives the red state its second open Senate contest in two years. Alexander said in a news release that he’s deeply grateful for being elected to serve more combined years as governor and senator than anyone else in Tennessee. But the 78-year-old said it’s now time for someone else to have that privilege. The long-tenured Tennessee leader’s decision raises speculation that popular Republican Gov. Bill Haslam could make a run for the Senate.

In addition to examining possible financial wrongdoing, investigators are scrutinizing donors who may have written sizable checks in exchange for access to the Trump administration, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. GOP set for blame over shutdown | TheHill

Republicans are facing a starkly different shutdown fight as they close a difficult 2018 that will see them ushered out of the House majority. A little less than a year ago, MORE and his GOP allies enjoyed a victory in January over Democrats in what they termed the “Schumer shutdown.” At the time, the party was riding high off Trump’s biggest legislative victory to date: passage of a huge tax-cut bill. The GOP rejected Democratic demands to add language helping young undocumented immigrants to a government-funding bill, and then watched with glee as the opposing party
